This ornate belt purse, known as a Mahfaza, is a fine example of traditional Yemeni metalwork. Crated primarily from silver, its semi-circular form is richly embellished with filagree coils across across the top, whilst delicate silver wires are shaped into elegant wave motifs along the sides. The hinged upper plate is secured with a pin, and opens up to reveal a compartment once used to store personal items such as coins or even small sheets inscribed with Qur'anic verses - objects of both practical and spiritual significance. The last thing worth pointing out is the metal clip on the back, suggesting that this Mahfaza was most likely worn on a traditional Yemeni belt, along with a Jambiya dagger and other ornaments.
