This low lying chair is characteristic of the Swat Valley region. The hardwood structure was constructed using traditional joinery methods - without nails - and features a seat made from tightly-woven leather straps. The backrest is richly decorated, with ornate blossoms and smaller plant carvings adorning the vertical supports and the semi-circular backboard. The two upper columns are connected by a leather band, which help incorporate a sense of visual balance to the design. Overall, given its small and rustic appearance, this chair would work well for those seeking an bold, decorative feature for their home.

History

The motifs on this chair reflect the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Swat Valley, a mountainous region in northern Pakistan. Once part of the ancient Silk Road, it became a melting pot of artistic influence brought from travellers, traders and conquerors. Its architectural traditions blend Gandharan Buddhist elements from the east with Persian floral motifs from the west, and even Greco-Roman features that date back to Alexander the Great's arrival in 327 BC.

These creations served a variety of purposes. Most were part of everyday life, used for sitting around low tables during meals and gatherings, whilst others were crafted as devotional chairs used in prayer, or as special pieces made for a wedding ceremony. Although this particular chair is now too fragile for functional use, these possible uses remind us that its role may have been as symbolic as it was practical.
