This mid-19th-century Tekke Turkoman dip khali wedding rug (circa 1850–1860) is a masterpiece of pre-commercial nomadic tribal art. Woven for a high-status family’s ceremonial dowry, the glowing madder-red field is anchored by perfectly proportioned rows of classic octagonal Tekke guls framed by precise, micro-geometric star-and-checkerboard guard borders. Crucially, the rug features the highly coveted combination of an intact, fully hand-knotted pile elem (skirt) showing a complex serrated chevron-and-diamond layout, alongside vibrant fuchsia-magenta highlights of rare, imported cochineal insect-dyed silk embedded within the centers of the primary motifs. The reverse displays a remarkably tight, dense asymmetric knot profile on an un-depressed, flat-backed all-wool foundation.
