This well-drawn rug most likely belongs to the Kazak sub-group. It is abundant with textural tribal imagery, from the enclosing latched-hook motifs along the border to the sturdy formation of jagged diamonds in the centre. Whilst it is also interesting to note the depictions of small animals and human figures, the most impressive feature has to be the atmospheric teal-blue of the main field, that is effectively sectioned off by the beige frame. Overall, this piece embodies the best qualities of traditional caucasian craftsmanship.
