Antique Caucasian Marasali Shirvan Prayer Rug

This antique Marasali prayer rug demonstrates a mature and carefully structured design. Interlocking birds, softly drawn star motifs, and reciprocal guard heads are all characteristic features of weavings from this region. However, the central composition is especially compelling, with an ivory ground providing a luminous backdrop for the dense arrangement of serrated boteh motifs, scattered within the mihrab and adjoining spandrels. Although the rug shows some condition issues—most notably in the lower panel—its age, character, and artistic merit makes it an interesting piece.
