This 19th Century Konagkend rug has an alluring design. The four borders manage to display traditional caucasian motifs in a creative manner, using stylised spiders and shaded diagonal bars, whilst the central field is made up of various connecting polygons and small birds. Whilst this section may be difficult to interpret, it allows for a thought-provoking response from the admirer, as they get lost in the maze-like pattern. Therefore, the use of a limited colour palette with intruiging imagery seems to work well in this rug.
History
History
The state of Quba is situated on the crossroads between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Once part of the Persian and Russian Empires, this region was historically known for its carpet schools, that were formed in the 18th Century. Over time, its most populated city (also called Quba) was established as the largest rug centre of independent Azerbaijan.
