19th-century antique Karachov Kazak long rug is a highly collectible and historically significant example of Southwest Caucasian tribal weaving. Woven on a wool foundation, it departs from the more common square proportions of the type to showcase an elongated vertical layout. The central field features a deep, abrashed indigo blue ground that acts as a dramatic backdrop for three large, geometricized medallions. The top and bottom medallions display commanding, stepped cruciform outlines in madder red, while the middle section is flanked by the iconic, rigid square blocks characteristic of the Karachov design dialect. Every compartment is densely packed with ancient nomadic symbology, including latch-hooks, stylized stars, and geometric S-motifs. Framing this powerful central field is a wide, ivory-ground border decorated with a repeating sequence of bold, geometric blossoms, flanked by narrow, reciprocal guard stripes that lock the entire composition together. Relying entirely on premium, saturated natural dyes, the textile exhibits a beautifully oxidized patination, soft tonal variations, and honest wear consistent with its 19th-century village origins.
Heavy wear all over and multiple repairs.
