East Anatolian Rashwan Malatya kilim dates to the mid 19th century or earlier. Its rich, pre-commercial palette relies entirely on organic vegetable dyes, highlighting intense horizontal abrash shading in the deep indigo blue  and showcasing prized, blue-toned cochineal purples characteristic of Armenian master dye-houses. What elevates this piece is its explicit religious and cultural iconography; a deep indigo central medallion nested with six-pointed Star of David motifs is framed by ivory tracks bearing a continuous, bold chain of Christian cruciform borders. Exhibiting obvious archaic wear this historic textile is testament to the fluid cultural exchange in Armenian communities in 19th-century Anatolia.
