Steps to Sustainability
One could argue that importance of preserving artefacts from old has never been so important. In a world where large scale factories dominate the production landscape, the work of family weavers and dedicated artisans is being undermined, and age-old crafts and techniques are being lost in the process.
SIEZ Gallery has always endeavoured provide decorative, handmade items for your home. The key word here is handmade. This is because in today's world, a machine can make the ‘perfect’ version of a rug, one that is completely symmetrical and perfectly cut. However, the character is simply non-existent. It just doesn’t feel the same. Compare this to a rug that took multiple months of sweat and toil to make, in a small village community in the Caucuses. The difference is remarkable, not only in the essence of the piece but also in the material. This is because although the factory-made copies use synthetic material that is cheaper and easy to get a hold of, much of the original pieces are made using high-quality wool. Not only does this feel better, but it also makes the rug a lot more durable and long-lasting. In other words, more sustainable.
That is why we try to preserve and look after our rugs as best as possible, often cleaning and repairing them or leaving in original condition so that the future generations can enjoy them just as much as us.
